thought experiments were pretty cool when Einstein did them to break people out of Victorian mechanics mindset before spaceships had been invented yet, but over the 20th century those things devolved into something archonic. social science people, psychologists mostly, inducting people into their cults by telling them tales about Higher Selves and occasionally conducting a liturgical representation of one of those to endow the shakier ones with power

and relativity turned into a loophole finding contest straight away. if u don’t want people to pick your thought experiment of a crazy hypothetical situation apart you are preaching, not experimenting

Gun Control in Britain: A Timeline

the gun control timescale in Britain is basically a 200 year history:

1800: Merrie England is at play. If you can afford a firearm then congratulations it’s yours.

1820: The Westphalian Peace breaks down as Britain has won its first industrial age war and realises that there are a lot of poor and/or crazed Boneyonic War veterans running around and someone should start to pay attention

1870: Britain realises it can extort money out of people by making them buy loicences but does not yet seriously restrict their issue

1900: Introduction of ineffective but annoying paperwork restrictions

1920: The Congress of Vienna peace broke down and there was another, bigger, industrialler war: Now With Class Militancy. The paperwork moves from being annoying to being restrictive as you now had to keep the police sweet

1940: One could no longer apply for permission to own a rifle for self-defence (Krauts. Japs etc. notwithstanding. different jurisdiction entirely there)

1970: Shotguns entered the “keep the police sweet” zone. It is forbidden by law for criminals to possess firearms illegally.

At this point the convenient lunatics start going on shooting sprees about once a decade and the law gets more and more restrictive after each one until

2001: The security state which has obviously been building over the past century finally puts out some huge fruiting bodies and shoots Freedom Spores everywhere. This is barely noticeable in this timeline however because at this point the Police, the Freemasons and Parliament are starting to run out of firearms to ban. but the legislative tempo established in the 80s continues

2012: Special permission is granted for the discharging of firearms by competitors in the Olympic Games. Special permission is not granted for Team Great Britain to train at discharging firearms

Current year (2020): hahahahahahaha uh maybe we could require airsoft licences. would you like that? for your health!

there are certain occult milieux where although it is not fair to say that *everyone* in the scene believes they are actually from fairyland or secretly the sun god, it is fair to say that those people are living to some degree as though they are, and in very many cases this is because of a hardcore of lunatics who really and deeply believe they have some fantastic background and they expressed and evangelised this vibe so well that everyone in the scene picked up on it to a greater or lesser extent. everyone outside the vibe bubble can tell these people are living in a sort of fairyland of their imaginations where they are Atlanteans or whatever.

the transhumanist milieu is one such. although most H+ people do not believe they are living in the big c Computer, there is a hardcore of lunatics who really do believe they are living in JEHOVAH’s big Computer and so the “eventually feasible idea” is a fait accompli. this vibe leaks through and pools in people who merely live inside the little c computer on their desk.

[if you find yourself using] the phrase “potentially practical” to refer to a fairyland scenario of cloning identities on the computer that is anything but practical and if you are in a mood for philosophical elimination, i really encourage you to put “thought experiments” like this back where they belong in fairy tales, because it will dissolve so many problems.

people never talk about the technogimmick in The Diamond Age

The Diamond Age, like all Neal Stephenson novels, is about revolutionary shifts in the means of production of something – in this case the transition from “The Feed”, a futuristic centralised hub-and-spoke nanoassembly infrastructure to a different archeofuturistic mode “The Seed” where everything is grown by Vegetables that have been Invented by a Society, to produce commodities

the implication is that this solves the alienation problem which the various polities of the world, all more or less self-consciously Trad as Fuarq, have been butting their heads against throughout the novel, because it pleases quite hardcore anarcho-commies very much to be alienated from production of commodities when it is performed in mysterious ways by a vegetable in the field next to your cottage.
